The upcoming project will be helmed by Ava DuVernay, who directed the films Selma and 13th – both of which were nominated for Oscars.
Variety reports that the filmmaker has already been working on the series for several months. It is set to cover the ‘Kiss’ star’s entire life and has been greenlit by his estate, who have granted their full cooperation.
Video footage, images and interviews will be included, with DuVernay gaining access to the late icon’s extensive archive.
Following news of the project breaking, the director tweeted: “Prince was a genius, a joy and a jolt to the senses. He was like no other. He shattered preconceived notions, smashed boundaries, and shared his heart through his music.
“The only way I know how to make this film is with love and great care.”
